Volunteer Jill Hunter arrived at Bakie Elementary to weave at a floor loom with students in grade four during the month of January. All of the students, grades 1-5, will experience weaving in a variety of ways. Partially funded by proceeds from the Fairy House building activity in December, Jill partnered with Harrisville Designs in Harrisville, NH, who generously provided the two 22 inch floor looms that our fourth graders are working with. Harrisville's textile history dates back to 1794, and the fourth graders will learn not only how to use the loom, but also about where fibers come from, and it's place in NH history. Students will learn about the process of weaving and participate in creating fabric in several patterns including twill. All students will collaborate on a final project, suitable for framing.
